The website mistakes quietly costing trades work

A bad website does not send you an error message. It just quietly loses the customers who looked, judged and rang someone else. These are the mistakes we see most often on the trade sites we rebuild.

The ones customers notice in five seconds

People judge a site the way they judge a van: instantly, and on appearance. The most common giveaways:

  • A design untouched for a decade, on a template customers have seen a hundred times
  • Stretched or distorted photos, squashed to fit boxes they were never meant for
  • Clip-art and generic stock images where photos of real jobs should be
  • Walls of text nobody reads, in three fonts and five colours
  • Harsh gradients and effects that date the site to the 2000s

The technical failures you cannot see, but your customers can

Around 70% of the people searching for a trade are on a phone. A site that breaks on mobile, with tiny text and buttons that need zooming, fails the majority of its visitors before they read a word. Slow loading does similar damage: people give up and press back.

Then there is the padlock. A site without SSL shows a Not secure warning in the browser bar, which reads to a customer exactly how it sounds. And an address like businessname on a builder's subdomain quietly says the business cut a corner. None of these are hard to fix. All of them cost work while they stand.

The content that is simply missing

The most expensive mistakes are absences. No prices, when a price on the page is a trust signal in itself and a quote form reads as expensive. No photos of completed jobs, when your work is the whole reason to hire you. No reviews or accreditations anywhere.

The quietest one is geography. A site that never names its towns is invisible to the searches that matter, because someone typing plumber in Heaton will only find pages that mention Heaton. And the phone number, the entire point of the site, is too often buried three taps deep instead of sitting at the top of every page.

What good looks like

The fix is not complicated and it is not flashy. Fast, secure, built for phones first, real work shown big, the towns named, the price clear, and one obvious way to get in touch. That is the whole job.

If you suspect your own site has some of these problems, the cheapest first step is to look at it on your phone the way a customer would, then look at what a rebuilt version could be. We show trades the finished redesign before any bill exists, so the comparison costs nothing.

The short version
